Question

How to upgrade MySQL server from 5.1 to 5.6?

Answer

Please note this instruction for CLIENT database server only. You cannot upgrade mysql server with Plesk database.

The easiest upgrade method is to use Plesk autoinstaller. Just type the following command in command line.

plesk installer

MySQL upgrade manual from the vendor can be used also.

Important: Please do not forget to back up data before the upgrade. In general, instructions are the following:

  1. Create dump of all databases, this dump could be helpful in case if something would go wrong:

    "%plesk_dir%\\Databases\\MySQL51\\bin\\mysqldump" -uadmin -p<PASSWORD> -P3306 --all-databases --routines > all.dump
  2. Download mysql-5.6.33-win32.zip

  3. For the backup purpose create copy of the following folders, here client databases are saved:

    %plesk_dir%\\Databases\\MySQL
    %plesk_dir%\\Databases\\MySQL51
  4. Stop mysql service:

    NET STOP MySQL
  5. Rename old MySQL51 folder, extract folder from downloaded archive to %plesk_dir%\\Databases\\ and rename to MySQL51 .

  6. Start MySQL server

    NET START MySQL
  7. Upgrade MySQL:

    "%plesk_dir%\\Databases\\MySQL51\\bin\\mysql_upgrade" -uadmin -p<PASSWORD> -P3306

    or starting from Plesk 12.0

    "%plesk_bin%\\mysqlmng.exe" --upgrade-local-service
