Monit is not restarting Apache: the status is Service monitoring is turned off because it shuts down frequently

Applicable to:

  • Plesk 12.5 for Linux
  • Plesk 12.0 for Linux

Symptoms

  1. Apache service was not started by Watchdog after the service was stopped.

  2. Service monitoring status is Service monitoring is turned off because it shuts down frequently when hovering mouse over the clock-icon:

  3. Options Stop monitoring the service if it frequently restarts and Connection timeout are enabled in Watchdog settings:

  4. /usr/local/psa/var/modules/watchdog/log/monit.log contains the following records:

    GENERIC: error receiving data -- Resource temporarily unavailable
    'apache' failed protocol test [generic] at INET[10.10.10.10:80].
    'apache' trying to restart
    'apache' failed to start
    'apache' process is not running
    *****
    'apache' service timed out and will not be checked anymore
  5. Apache was down for quite a long time and /var/log/httpd/error_log contains the following records:

    [notice] caught SIGTERM, shutting down

Cause

Apache was down and Watchdog stopped monitoring it according to the settings.

Resolution

  1. Go to: Home > Extensions > Watchdog

  2. Enable service monitoring by clicking on Magnifying-glass icon at Web Server (Apache)

  3. Enable Watchdog itself if it is not enabled.
