SMTP authentication is not working in Postfix: SASL authentication failure: cannot connect to saslauthd server

Applicable to:

  • Plesk 12.5 for Linux

Symptoms

SMTP authentication issues.

Webmail showing the follwoing error while trying to send mail:

SMTP Error (535): Authentication failed.

The following error can be found in /var/log/maillog :

Jan 25 11:12:51 srv103 postfix/smtpd[548966]: warning: SASL authentication failure: cannot connect to saslauthd server: No such file or directory
Jan 25 11:12:51 srv103 postfix/smtpd[548966]: warning: unknown[93.191.121.26]: SASL LOGIN authentication failed: generic failure

Cause

saslauthd service is having configuration issues or missing from the system.

Resolution

  1. Back up Postfix /etc/postfix/main.cf and /etc/postfix/master.cf configuration files

  2. Switch mail service to Qmail via Plesk autoinstaller

  3. Remove Postfix /etc/postfix/main.cf and /etc/postfix/master.cf configuration files

  4. Switch mail service back to Postfix
