Cannot login to my mailbox, mchk utiliti fails: "Unable to query mailnames: MySQL server has gone away"

Applicable to:

  • Plesk 11.x for Linux
  • Plesk 12.0 for Linux

Symptoms

Login fails when I try to login to my mailbox, no matter how. The following error is shown in /usr/local/psa/var/log/maillog :

Apr 22 11:30:34 example.com pop3d-ssl: IMAP connect from @ [::ffff:10.10.0.10]ERR: LOGIN FAILED, ip=[::ffff:10.10.0.11]

I have already tried to run mchk with the following command, which lead to an error:

/usr/local/psa/admin/sbin/mchk --without-spam
==> Checking for: mail_auth_dump...
fail
Errors occured in mail restore procedure
Some utilities have exited with errors:
/usr/lib64/plesk-9.0/mail_auth_dump

I run /usr/lib64/plesk-9.0/mail_auth_dump manually to check and found the following error:

Unable to query mailnames: MySQL server has gone away

Cause

The issue turns out to have been the fact that wait_timeout was set too low for this server.

# grep  wait_timeout /etc/my.cnf
wait_timeout = 300

Resolution

To resolve the issue:

  1. Increase parameter wait_timeout in /etc/my.cnf file and restart mysql server.

  2. Run /usr/local/psa/admin/sbin/mchk again.
