Feedback form does not work: "Unable to connect to the SMTP server"

Symptoms

I have created a feedback form. However when the form is submitted, I get this error:

Cannot send feedback. Please check your connection settings and try again.
Unable to connect to the SMTP server. Please contact site administrator if the problem persists.

Cause

Invalid configuration of SMTP server:

Admin Panel > Server > Hosts > [Select Host] > SMTP Settings Tab

In web.config of the published site testdomain.tld username and password are not specified due to fact that ones are missing in host's SMTP settings in Sitebuilder settings:

 <system.net>
<mailSettings>
<smtp deliveryMethod="Network" from="mcannata@compstart.com">
<network host="relay.mydomain.com" port="25" defaultCredentials="false" userName="" password="" />
</smtp>
</mailSettings>
</system.net>

Resolution

Following these steps to resolve the issue:

  1. configure SMTP settings in Admin panel
  2. modify the feedback form properties for the site through Sitebuilder Wizard
  3. publish the site.
