Unable to start apache after editing httpd.conf: Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address

Applicable to:

  • Plesk 12.5 for Linux

Symptoms

Apache is down and cannot start with the following error:

(98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:80

An attempt to reconfigure domains fails:

# /usr/local/psa/admin/bin/httpdmng --reconfigure-all
Error occured while sending feedback. HTTP code returned: 502
Error occured while sending feedback. HTTP code returned: 502

Cause

Duplicate entries in Apache configuration file.

Resolution

  1. Find the duplicated entries:

    # grep Listen /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf

    Listen 80
    Listen 80
  2. Remove one Listen entry and restart Apache:

    # service httpd restart
  3. Reconfigure Apache:

    # /usr/local/psa/admin/bin/httpdmng --reconfigure-all
