Apache Segmentation fault on configtest

Applicable to:

  • Plesk for Linux

Symptoms

Unable to start apache:

# /etc/init.d/apache2 start
* Starting web server apache2
* The apache2 configtest failed.
Output of config test was:
/usr/sbin/apache2ctl: line 138: 23872 Segmentation fault $HTTPD ${APACHE_ARGUMENTS} -t
Action 'configtest' failed.
The Apache error log may have more information.
  • Check for enabled php modules
    ~# ls -1 /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/*php*
    /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/php5.conf
    /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/php5.load
    /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/php7.0.conf
    /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/php7.0.load

Cause

Apache has two different PHP version modules enabled simultaneously.

Resolution

Disable one of PHP modules

# a2dismod php5

OR

# a2dismod php7.0
