551 This mail server requires authentication before sending mail from a locally hosted domain

Symptoms

Emails sent from mailbox1@example.com to mailbox2@example.com are rejected with the following error:

551 This mail server requires authentication before sending mail from a locally hosted domain. Please reconfigure your mail client to authenticate before sending mail.

Connected users from Office 365 cannot send emails with the following notification:

550 5.0.350 Remote server returned an error -> 551 This mail server requires authentication before sending mail from a locally hosted domain. Please reconfigure your mail client to authenticate before sending mail

Cause

This error means that a server or client has connected to the SMTP service to send email, using a sender address domain which exists on the mail server, but has not authenticated.

Resolution

Disable spoofing option in  MailEnable > Servers > Localhost > Connectors > SMTP > right click on SMTP > Properties > Security > Address spoofing > set to "Anyone can spoof sender address"
