403 Forbidden is shown on all websites after dist-upgrade: No matching DirectoryIndex (none) found, and server-generated directory index forbidden by Options directive

Applicable to:

  • Plesk 12.5 for Linux
  • Plesk Onyx for Linux

Symptoms

All websites show 403 Forbidden error after dist-upgrade or Apache test page.

In apache error log can be found records like:

Cannot serve directory /var/www/vhosts/default/htdocs/: No matching DirectoryIndex (none) found, and server-generated directory index forbidden by Options directive

Cause

Apache module mod_dir is disabled.

Resolution

Enable module through Plesk > Tools & Settings > Apache Web server settings

Select dir module and click OK .

Note: "IncludeOptional mods-enabled/*.conf" should be included to the /etc/apache2/apache2.conf:

# grep "IncludeOptional mods-enabled/\*\.conf" /etc/apache2/apache2.conf
IncludeOptional mods-enabled/*.conf
