Applicable to:

  • Plesk 10.x for Windows
  • Plesk 12.0 for Windows

Symptoms

An attempt to activate mail service on domain fails with one of the following errors:

PLESK_ERROR: Error: mail_Facade->turnOnDomain() failed: mailmng failed: Can't rename domain.
Domain: example.com [example.com].
Reason:

at execute console command --turn-on-domain(vconsoleapp::start line 132)
at execute "C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Parallels\\Plesk\\/admin/bin/mailmng" --turn-on-domain "--domain-name=example.com"(vconsoleapp::run line 143)

PLESK_ERROR: Can't update domain settings. Domain: example.com. Reason: Failed apply the settings for 'osprey-property.co.uk' at (SmarterMail::SMDomain::throwDomainError line 887) at execute console command --set-discard(vconsoleapp::start line 100) at execute "C:\Program Files (x86)\Parallels\Plesk\admin\bin\mailmng.exe" --set-discard "--domain-name=example.com"(vconsoleapp::run line 117)

The mchk.exe utility fails with the same "Failed to rename domain" error:

C:\> mchk.exe --domain --domain-name=example.com --fix=local
Can't rename domain.
Domain: example.com [example.com].
Reason:
Failed to rename domain 'example.com.disabled' to 'example.com'
at (SmarterMail::SMDomain::throwDomainError line 630)
at execute console command --domain(vconsoleapp::start line 132)
at execute mchk.exe --domain "--domain-name=example.com" "--fix=local"(vconsoleapp::run line 143)

Cause

The C:\\SmarterMail\\Domains\\example.com folder already existed on the server.

In general while disabling mail service corresponding "SmarterMail\Domains" folder is being renamed to .disabled , the name is changed back to original one when the mail service for domain is switched on again.

Resolution

  1. Connect to the server with RDP.
  2. Locate and backup C:\\SmarterMail\\Domains\\example.com and C:\\SmarterMail\\Domains\\example.com.disabled folders.

  3. Compare the content/size of the folders, choose the one that has all users in the Users subfolder and rename that folder to 'example.com.disabled' (if needed).

  4. Activate mail service under the Mail > Change Setting
