Introduction

Types of Updates:

Important Updates (for example Service Packs for Windows)
Regular updates
*Security updates

Important Updates upgrade systems to the most current code base.

Updates and Security updates resolve a known issue.

Updates should be adopted on an as-needed basis. They should be evaluated and applied only if computers within the organization are experiencing the problem the update is designed to resolve.

Security updates address security vulnerabilities. Attackers wanting to break into systems can exploit such vulnerabilities. Security updates are analogous to updates, but should be considered mandatory, and they must be deployed quickly.

Resolution

Windows:

By default all Security Updates installed automaticly. You can verify in following way:

  1. Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button . In the search box, type Update , and then, in the list of results, click Windows Update .

  2. In the left pane, click Change settings .

  3. Under Important updates you will see Installed updates automaticly(recommended) option .

To check for Windows updates :

  1. Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button . In the search box, type Update , and then, in the list of results, click Windows Update .

  2. In the left pane, click Check for updates , and then wait while Windows looks for the latest updates for your computer.

  3. If you want check what updates were installed , click View update history . You will see a list of installed updates .

    Additionaly for Security Updates you can check the Microsoft Security TechCenter - in this library you will find the security documents that have been released by the Microsoft Security Response Center (MSRC)

Linux:

To check for Linux updates:

The following commands can help you to see the status of updated package under Debian/Ubuntu Linux:

  apt-get update        # Fetches the list of available updates
apt-get upgrade # Strictly upgrades the current packages
apt-get dist-upgrade # Installs updates (new ones)

Under CentOS Linux server pass check-update option to yum command. You will find out if your machine had any updates that needed to be applied without running it interactively.

  yum check-update      # Check for available package updates
yum list updates # same with check-update option
