Migration fails: 'ascii' codec can't encode character

Applicable to:

  • Plesk 12.5 for Linux
  • Plesk Onyx for Linux

Symptoms

  1. Migration of customer's or reseller's account fails with error:

    [ERROR] Failed to import backup dumps to target panel's repositoryCause: 'ascii' codec can't encode character u'\xf6' in position 28: ordinal not in range(128)That is a critical error, migration was stopped.
  2. Account login name has non-ascii symbols like ö .

Cause

This is Plesk internal issue with ID #PMT-2625 , which is planned to be fixed in future Plesk updates.

Resolution

The following workaround can be implemented:

  1. Remove account from the destination server, if it exists on it.

  2. Remove non-ACSII symbol from login for account in Plesk > Customers > customer_name > Change Login Info on the source server.

  3. Start a new migration.
