Is it necessary to allocate /tmp, /var, root partitions separately? What if all the disk space is allocated to root file system?
It is strongly recommended to allocate /tmp, /var, root partitions separately. /var and /tmp partitions' content is very variable and separate partitioning helps avoid filling the disk at 100% of its capacity. This way, only a particular partition can run out of disk space bringing some services down. The system will stay functional.
If all the disk space is allocated to root file system, potentially, disk overflow can happen. For example, all disk space can be filled with mail messages, web content, temporary data used by some application, or backup files. It can bring all system down.
