Plesk is down after in-place OS upgrade

Symptoms

After in-place OS upgrade, using utilities like do-release-upgrade or apt-get dist upgrade , Plesk is almost removed, and sites are down.

Cause

In-place OS upgrade procedure is not supported by Plesk.

Resolution

  1. Create a backup of /etc/psa

    # tar zcf etc_psa.tgz /etc/psa
  2. Copy pre-remove dump from /var/lib/psa/dumps/mysql.plesk.core.prerm.<PLESK_VERSION>.dump.gz

  3. Install Plesk
  4. Restore pre-remove dump

        # zcat /root/mysql.plesk.core.prerm.<PLESK_VERSION>.dump.gz | mysql -uadmin -p`cat /etc/psa/.psa.shadow`
    1. Check that admin password is not corrupted.

      # plesk bin admin --show-password
    2. If it corrupted, /etc/psa content can be restored from the backup created previously. If it did not help, reset admin password

      # plesk bin admin --set-admin-password -passwd <PASSWORD>
    3. Reconfigure web sites

      # /usr/local/psa/bin/repair --run
    4. Verify that all sites are listed in Apache:

      # apache2ctl -S
