Plesk upgrade failed: "memory alloc (4 bytes) returned NULL"

Symptoms

  1. A Plesk upgrade fails with the following error at the bottom of /tmp/autoinstaller3.log :

memory alloc (4 bytes) returned NULL.
ERROR: Failed to run the Yum utility.
The Yum utility failed to install the required packages.
  2. The following warning from the Parallels Plesk pre-upgrade checker is also present in the same log file and was displayed in the Parallels Updater web interface before the upgrade started:

WARNING: Virtuozzo Container limit "privvmpages" was exceeded n times.
  3. The file /proc/user_beancounters has non-zero values in the last column ( failcnt ) for the limit privvmpages . This value increases after a failed upgrade attempt.

Cause

The Virtual Memory resources of the container are insufficient to run the upgrade.

Resolution

Increase the exceeded memory limit on the container.
