fail2ban does not start: Unable to remove PID file

Applicable to:

  • Plesk 12.5 for Linux

Symptoms

Unable to start fail2ban:

    # systemctl start fail2ban.service
Job for fail2ban.service failed. See 'systemctl status fail2ban.service' and 'journalctl -xn' for details.

In /var/log/fail2ban.log :

ERROR   Unable to remove PID file: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/var/run/fail2ban/fail2ban.pid'

Cause

Absent directory /var/run/fail2ban .

Resolution

Make sure that directory /var/run/fail2ban exists. Create it if it is absent:

    # ls -la /var/run/fail2ban
total 4
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 80 Apr 1 06:25 .
drwxr-xr-x 22 root root 880 Apr 1 06:25 ..
-rw------- 1 root root 6 Apr 1 06:25 fail2ban.pid
srwx------ 1 root root 0 Apr 1 06:25 fail2ban.sock
