Sending mail fails with error: Connection timed out

Symptoms

Unable to send emails using Postfix, getting the following error in /var/log/maillog :

hostname postfix/smtp[27827]: connect to mail.example.com[1.2.3.4]:25: Connection timed out

TCP port 25 connectivity test is successful:

# telnet mail.example.com 25
Trying 203.0.113.2...
Connected to mail.example.com.
Escape character is '^]'.

Cause

Postfix misconfiguration.

Resolution

  1. Comment out the following parameter in the /etc/postfix/main.cf :

    sender_dependent_default_transport_maps = hash:/var/spool/postfix/plesk/sdd_transport_maps
  2. Restart Postfix:

    # service postfix restart
  3. If the issue persists, run the following command to check mail configuration:
    # /usr/local/psa/admin/sbin/mchk
