License for Plesk 7.5/7.6 or 8.x for Windows fails to update

Applicable to:

  • Plesk
  • Plesk 10.x and below for Windows

IMPORTANT: This article applies only to Plesk 7.5 - 8.x for Windows installed on Windows XP/Windows Server 2003 (Microsoft Windows 5.2).

Symptoms

License is not renewed in Plesk and the following error is shown:

Key Update Status: Unable to update Plesk Key. An error occurred while processing your key. You can try to update it later. The key cannot be upgraded due to the network failure during connection with the Key Authority server. Please check that your Internet connection is configured, you can resolve and access ka.swsoft.com and your firewall enables outgoing connections to TCP port 5224.

Cause

On November 30, 2015, SSL certificate was renewed on Plesk licensing server - Key Administrator (ka.swsoft.com, ka.plesk.com, ka.odin.com). The new SSL certificate is secured by the Secure Hash Algorithm 1 (SHA2) family of hashing algorithms and the old one was secured by SHA1. Windows Server 2003 (including SP1 and SP2) does not support the SHA2 family of hashing algorithms, as the result system tools are unable to validate new certificate.

You can find more information here:

http://blogs.technet.com/b/pki/archive/2010/09/30/sha2-and-windows.aspx

Older versions of Plesk for Windows (7.x and 8.x) use mechanisms for SSL certificate verifications embedded in OS. As the system cannot verify SSL certificate, Plesk cannot connect Key Administrator to renew the license.

Resolution

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. Please read the following article and apply the hotfix

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/968730

After the hotfix is applied, please retrieve your license in Plesk by clicking Retrieve Key button in License Management section in your Plesk.
