Website shows HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable: The worker process failed to initialize correctly and therefore could not be started

Symptoms

Some sites show HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable.

Application pool is down used by this site.

Windows logs -> Application -> Event ID 2276

The worker process failed to initialize correctly and therefore could not be started.

Windows logs -> Plesk -> Event ID 1

The service has not been started. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070426)
In Microsoft.Web.Administration module

Cause

Incorrect permissions on ' C:\\Windows\\System32\\inetsrv\\config\\schema ' directory

Resolution

Assign Read,List,Execute permissions to Users group for ' C:\\Windows\\System32\\inetsrv\\config\\schema ' directory. If it does not fix the issue, follow the steps below to find out and set needed permissions:

  1. Make sure that the problem is with filesystem permissions by using 'Process Monitor' utility.

  2. Run procmon.exe and add the filter Result = "Access Denied"

  3. Restart application pools and access to Plesk website https://localhost:8443

  4. Stop capturing and you may see the result as on the picture:

  5. Set required permissions to this directory ' C:\\Windows\\System32\\inetsrv\\config\\schema '
