Cannot attach files in Roundcube: "The uploaded file exceeds the maximum size"

Applicable to:

  • Plesk for Linux

Symptoms

We cannot attach files greater than 5MB in Roundcube webmail and I cannot find the correct configuration file to edit to increase that size. The following error appears:

The uploaded file exceeds the maximum size of 5.0 MB

Cause

Upload limits defined in Roundcube specific PHP settings are exceeded.

Resolution

  1. Check the following parameters in PHP configuration for Roundcube:

    # cat /etc/psa-webmail/roundcube/php.ini|grep "upload_max_filesize"
    upload_max_filesize = 5M
    # cat /etc/psa-webmail/roundcube/php.ini|grep "post_max_size"
    post_max_size = 6M
    # cat /etc/psa-webmail/roundcube/php.ini|grep "memory_limit"
    memory_limit = 64M
  2. Increase the parameters values like in the following example:

    # cat /etc/psa-webmail/roundcube/php.ini|grep "upload_max_filesize"
    upload_max_filesize = 256M
    # cat /etc/psa-webmail/roundcube/php.ini|grep "post_max_size"
    post_max_size = 256M
    # cat /etc/psa-webmail/roundcube/php.ini|grep "memory_limit"
    memory_limit = 512M
