Watchdog shows that Apache is down, while it is actually running: Apache failed, cannot open a connection to INET

Applicable to:

  • Plesk 12.5 for Linux

Symptoms

Watchdog shows that Apache is down, while it is actually running on a server:

# status httpd status
* running

The following is written to /var/log/plesk/modules/monit.log file:

'apache' trying to restart
'apache' stop: /usr/local/psa/admin/bin/websrvmng
'apache' start: /usr/local/psa/admin/bin/websrvmng
'apache' failed, cannot open a connection to INET[203.0.113.2:80]

203.0.113.2 is a server IP:

# ip a | grep 203.0.113.2
inet 203.0.113.2/26 brd

Unable to telnet to 203.0.113.2 on 80 port:

# telnet 203.0.113.2 80
Trying 203.0.113.2...
telnet: connect to address 203.0.113.2: Connection refused

Cause

Server IP got banned by Fail2Ban, that is why Watchdog cannot retrieve Apache status at 80 port.

Resolution

Add server IP address 203.0.113.2 to the list of Trusted IPs of Fail2Ban:

Tools and Settings > IP Address Banning (Fail2Ban) > Trusted IP Addresses
