Migration fails: Unable to create the domain because a DNS record pointing to the host already exists.

Symptoms

  1. Migration from other hosting panels (Confixx, Helm, etc.) with panel migrator tool fails to transfer customers/subscriptions which have a subdomain, such as webmail .example.com

    Stderr is
    | | An error occurred during domain creation: unable to set domain name: Unable to create the domain webmail.example.com because a DNS record pointing to the host webmail.example.com already exists.
  2. In other cases, such issue may occur if there are two different subscriptions on source server with names as following: example.com , subname.example.com

Cause

This is Plesk internal issue with ID #PMT-2580 , which is considered to be fixed in future Plesk updates.

Workaround

Try either of the following:

  1. Temporarily remove A record for webmail.example.com from Tools & Settings > DNS Templates in Plesk, perform migration and add it back.

  2. Remove subname.example.com A record from DNS setttings of example.com in Home > Domains > example.com and run migration once again.
