Question
How to move a domain from one subscription to another?
Answer
Note: This feature is available starting from Plesk Obsidian. Update to the latest version to get this feature.
During this operation, files are being copied, not moved. Therefore, if a domain has a lot of content, this operation may take some time and consume disk space. Files are removed from the original location once the operation is completed. Mailboxes with messages are moved too.
Moving the main domain (subscription) is not possible if it has web users.
The following scenarios are supported:
-
Main domain (with its subdomains) can be moved to another subscription, becoming an additional domain on the target subscription. This is only possible if there are no additional domains on the subscription from which the main domain is moved. The original subscription will be removed, since it will have no domains/subdomains left in it.
-
Additional domain (with its subdomains) can be moved to another subscription, becoming an additional domain on the target subscription. The target subscription must have enough resources to accommodate the moved objects.
-
Additional domain (with its subdomains) can be moved to a new subscription, becoming the main domain on the new subscription. The new subscription will be created on the same service plan as the source subscription, from which the domain was moved.
-
Go to:
-
Subscriptions > example.com and click Move domain in Service Provider view.
-
Websites & Domains > click
in the domain's card in Power User view.
Note: If the Move domain button is grayed out, point the mouse to this button to find out why.
-
-
Select an existing subscription from the list or create a new subscription for this domain. Click Move.
Note: Service plans of both the source and target subscriptions must allow the customer to manage all types of objects on the moved domain. For example, if the domain has a subdomain, then both the source and target subscriptions must allow the customer to manage domains and subdomains. Otherwise, the Move link will not be available.
Connect to a Plesk server via SSH (Linux) / RDP (Windows Server) and use the 'plesk bin subscription' utility:
-
to move a main domain from one subscription to another.
# plesk bin subscription --merge source-example.com -webspace-name target-example.com
-
to move an additional domain to another subscription:
# plesk bin site --move addon.domain -webspace-name example.net
-
to create a new subscription from an additional domain:
# plesk bin site --move addon.domain -login addon_user -passwd <password>

According to this article, How can I move mail accounts between subscriptions which are in the same customer?
Hi, the solution is only to create new mailboxes and transfer content manually.
In the following article, its being explained how to move an domain, to another subscription?!?
https://support.plesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/115002567045-How-to-change-the-owner-for-the-subscription-in-Plesk-
Hello @Peter van der Kleij,
Let me explain that the article instructs how to assign a whole subscription to another owner in Plesk: a customer or a reseller.
Additional information about customers and resellers in Plesk can be found in our documentation:
https://docs.plesk.com/en-US/onyx/administrator-guide/customers-and-resellers.70622/
This button is missing on my plesk server.
Do i need to change a setting or something like that to activate it?
@Alexander Steenbrugge,
Please check whether you have Plesk Obsidian installed, as Move domain feature isn't available in Plesk Onyx.
To check the version:
1. Log into Plesk.
2. On the Home page check System Overview box:
If the version differs, consider upgrading: https://support.plesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/213408749
@Anzhelika Khapaknysh Thx for the info.
In have the Onyx version so i have to look for a other option.
Hello @Alexander Steenbrugge,
In that case, the solution may be to manually copy the site content or to use this extension https://www.plesk.com/extensions/site-import/ to 1st copy the domain to another Plesk server and back to the target one.
I have found an issue using Obsidian on Windows Server.
I am running version: Version 18.0.21 Update #4, last updated on Dec 3, 2019 10:26 AM
a customer has 2 subscriptions on their account and this customer wants to combine them in to 1.
each subscription has 1 domain name
i go to subscription1.com and click move domain, the search box for available subscriptions loads but searching does not find subscription2.com
i assume search is only looking at other customers and not subscriptions under the same user.
Hello, @Christopher, most probably the issue occurs due to the fact that target subscription has not enough resources. Please check that the allocated amount of available domains for target subscription is enough in it Service Plan or Customization.
I found a problem with domains migration.
Migration is not possible when in the destination subscription none of the domains has the MAIL functionality enabled (probable the same for other features).
But it works if at least one domain from the destination has the mail functionality enabled (even an add-on domain).
Plesk web panel doesn't indicate any error or warning, just shows that no such subscription when you search for it.
When migrated from CLI - it says: Unable to move the domain because the mail service is disabled on the target subscription.
Please improve the "move domain" functionality to avoid this situation.
For example, even if a subscription cannot be used as destination for a domain migration - it should still be listed in the search results, but being graylisted. When it is selected - Plesk web panel should indicate the same message as CLI tool.
Hi Oleg Burca!
Thank you for the feedback! I will forward this feedback to the responsible team, we will think on improving it in future releases.

How do I undo this?
Hi Gordon Lewis
Could you please explain the situation in more details?
What action exactly you wish to undo?
My screen does not look like those at all. I don't have the simple 10 domain system. I have the big one. I don't see any choices to move the domain to another subscription or to even create a subscription for it. I created a site, signed the dnssec, create mail accounts and assigned it, inadvertently to a subscription. Now it looks like a subdomain and it's in the wrong location. I can't create a new subscription of the same name. Am I completely stuck. Should I start over?
started over since it wasn't taking mail, yet. solved
This end with the error: site-copy failed: tar: ./wp-content: file changed as we read it
How to prevent this? I did suspend and disable the source site but still, it was not successful.
Hey there @Sharul Hafiz!
If the solution from this KB article did not help, I'd suggest to submit a request to Plesk Technical Support for troubleshooting
