Unable to create mail acconts: Unable to update the mail account properties OR That name is already being used

Applicable to:

  • Plesk 11.x for Windows
  • Plesk 12.0 for Windows
  • Plesk 12.5 for Windows

Symptoms

Unable to create the mail account from Plesk:

Error: Unable to update the mail account properties:mailmng failed: Can't create mail name.
Domain: example.com [example.com].
Mail name: account.
Reason:
Failed to add the user 'account@example.com'. That name is already being used.
(Error code 1)

Cause

Those mail accounts are already present in Smartermail.

Resolution

  1. Take a backup of complete directory C:\\SmarterMail\\Domains\\example.com\\Users\\ (the folder path can be different depending on SmarterMail installation folder)

  2. Log in to SmarterMail admin panel and remove accounts which are being created

  3. Use the commands below to create the accounts via command line:

    C:\\>cd %plesk_bin%

    C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Parallels\\Plesk\\admin\\bin> for /f %i in (C:\\mail.txt) do mail.exe --create %i@example.com -passwd 1******# -mailbox true

List of the created accounts should be copied to C:\\mail.txt .

Following command can be used to create mailboxes from the file:

    for /f "tokens=1,2" %a in ('type "path to the file\\mail_and_password.txt"') do "%plesk_dir%\\bin\\mail.exe" -c %a -passwd %b -mailbox true

    where mail_and_password.txt contains following:

    mailbox1@example.com password_for_mailbox1
    mailbox2@example.com password_for_mailbox2

If solution from above did not help use the following instructions:

  1. Backup entire directory C:\\SmarterMail\\Domains\\example.com\\ (the folder path can be different depending on SmarterMail installation folder)

  2. Log in to SmarterMail admin panel and remove domain which is affected

  3. Run mchk utility to re-create domain:

    "%plesk_bin%\\mchk.exe" --domain --domain-name=example.com --fix=local
  4. Restore directory C:\\SmarterMail\\Domains\\example.com\\ from backup
