Symptoms

Unable to apply skip-grant-tables directive after restarting mysql service

Cause

skip-grant-tables directive cannot be applied due to hung mysql process:

    # ps aux | grep -i mysql
mysql 1401 1.4 4.8 667476 152356 ? Sl 16:18 0:32 /usr/sbin/mysqld --basedir=/usr --datadir=/var/lib/mysql --plugin-dir=/usr/lib/mysql/plugin --user=mysql --skip-log-error --pid-file=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid --socket=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock --port=3306

Resolution

Kill hung process and re-apply skip-grant-tables directory:

    kill -9 1401
# cat /etc/my.cnf
...
[mysqld]
skip-grant-tables
...
# /etc/init.d/mysqld restart
