Cannot open File Manager: Symlinks out of webspace are prohibited /: Access to realpath denied

Applicable to:

Symptoms

  • Opening Subscription > example.com > File Manager fails with a warning:
    Symlinks out of webspace are prohibited /: Access to realpath denied: /var/www/vhosts/example.com/ to /var/www/vhosts/example.com.
  • Errors in /var/log/syslog :
    systemd[1]: user@10243.service: Start request repeated too quickly.
    systemd[1]: Failed to start User Manager for UID 10243.
    systemd[1]: Stopped User Manager for UID 10243.
    systemd[1]: Removed slice user-10243.slice.
    systemd[1]: Created slice user-10243.slice.
  • Errors in /var/log/plesk/panel.log :
    stderr: move_to_cgroup(): pam_open_session() failed 6: Permission denied
    move process 30694 to cgroup for user john_doe failed
  • CGroups are enabled on the server:
    # plesk sbin resctrl --status
    enabled

Cause

This is Plesk bug with ID # PPPM-6057 which is planned to be fixed in future Plesk updates.

Resolution

As a workaround, add the following directive to Subscriptions > example.com> Apache & nginx Settings :

<Directory /var/www/vhosts/example.com/httpdocs>
Options +ExecCGI +FollowSymlinks
</Directory>
