ASP.Net Core application does not work: Internal Server Error: 0x80070021

Applicable to:

  • Plesk for Windows

Symptoms

Opening a web page of the ASP.NET Core application results in HTTP Error 500.19.

The similar error message appears on the web page:

Error Code 0x80070021.
Config Source:
4: <handlers>
5: <add name="aspNetCore" path="*" verb="*" modules="AspNetCoreModule" resourceType="Unspecified" />
6: </handlers>

Cause

The option Prohibit the ability to override handlers via web.config is enabled at Plesk > Tools & Settings > Security policy page.

Every ASP.NET Core application uses its own IIS handler defined in the web.config file located in the root folder of an application. This option blocks custom IIS handlers for web pages, making ASP.NET Core applications dysfunctional.

Resolution

Disable the option Prohibit the ability to override handlers via web.config at Plesk > Tools & Settings > Security policy page.
