phpMyAdmin is too slow

Applicable to:

  • Plesk for Linux

PhpMyAdmin takes significant time to open.

Stracing of the phpMyAdmin process gives the following output:

stat("/tmp/sess_n8hmosf5atqf9b49qalgrvfl93", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0600, st_size=48, ...}) = 0
unlink("/tmp/sess_n8hmosf5atqf9b49qalgrvfl93") = -1 EPERM (Operation not permitted)
stat("/tmp/sess_ud0qfqbg82kvsckro5t0sqv1h1", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0600, st_size=0, ...}) = 0
unlink("/tmp/sess_ud0qfqbg82kvsckro5t0sqv1h1") = -1 EPERM (Operation not permitted)

There are a lot of files in /tmp directory:

# ls -f1 /tmp | wc -l

It is caused by a product defect in PHP 5.3. This is Plesk bug with ID #PPPM-6059 that will be fixed in future Plesk updates.

As a workaround, to fix the issue create a cron task that will clean /tmp directory once a week:

1. Go to the cron tasks available:

# crontab -e

2. Then, insert the following task to be performed once a week (for instance, during the night from Sunday to Monday at 3 AM):

0  3   *   *   1  find /tmp/ -type f -mtime +7 -name sess_\* -delete
