PAM configuration files get overwritten after Plesk update

Applicable to:

  • Plesk 12.5 for Linux

Symptoms

Pam configuration files in /etc/pam.d/ get overwritten after Plesk update.

The following files can be modified in /etc/pam.d/ :

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 892 Feb 21 03:16 fingerprint-auth 
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 892 Feb 21 03:16 fingerprint-auth-ac 
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1448 Feb 21 03:16 password-auth 
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1448 Feb 21 03:16 password-auth-ac 
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1448 Feb 21 03:16 system-auth 
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1448 Feb 21 03:16 system-auth-ac 
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1448 Feb 21 03:16 system-auth-local

The errors observed in update logs:

Feb 21 03:33:01 plesk01 crond[21474]: (root) PAM ERROR (Failure setting user credentials) 
Feb 21 03:33:01 plesk01 crond[21474]: (root) FAILED to authorize user with PAM (Failure setting user credentials)
Feb 21 03:48:01 plesk01 crond[22991]: (root) PAM ERROR (Failure setting user credentials)
Feb 21 03:48:01 plesk01 crond[22991]: (root) FAILED to authorize user with PAM (Failure setting user credentials)
Feb 21 04:00:01 plesk01 crond[24225]: (root) PAM ERROR (Failure setting user credentials)
Feb 21 04:00:01 plesk01 crond[24225]: (root) FAILED to authorize user with PAM (Failure setting user credentials)
Feb 21 04:01:01 plesk01 crond[24339]: (root) PAM ERROR (Failure setting user credentials)

SSH login is not possible under any user with UID started from the specific value.

The error may appear in /var/log/secure :

Feb 22 09:56:21 plesk01 sshd[10119]: pam_succeed_if(sshd:auth): requirement "uid >= 1000" not met by user "root"

Cron job cannot be started. This error can be observed in /var/log/cron :

Feb 21 03:33:01 plesk01 crond[21474]: (root) PAM ERROR (Failure setting user credentials) 
Feb 21 03:33:01 plesk01 crond[21474]: (root) FAILED to authorize user with PAM (Failure setting user credentials)

Cause

Software bug with id #PPPM-5889 : will be fixed in future Plesk updates.

Resolution

As a workaround, rebuild /etc/pam.d files with authconfig-tui tool.
