Unable to start Apache: (11)Resource temporarily unavailable: setuid: unable to change to uid: 502

Symptoms

  • Apache web server cannot be started.
  • The following errors can be found in /var/log/httpd/error_log :
    [Tue Feb 14 15:31:18 2017] [alert] (11)Resource temporarily unavailable: setuid: unable to change to uid: 502
    [Tue Feb 14 15:31:18 2017] [alert] (11)Resource temporarily unavailable: setuid: unable to change to uid: 502
    [Tue Feb 14 15:31:18 2017] [alert] (11)Resource temporarily unavailable: setuid: unable to change to uid: 502

Conditions

Max user processes limit is reached for Apache.

Resolution

Increase max user processes limit for Apache, for that:

  1. Check max processes limit:
    cat /proc/<PID>/limits | grep -i "max processes"
    Max processes    1024    1024    processes

    Note : where <PID> is PID of the parent process of Apache web server.
  2. Increase max process value. For example:
    echo "ulimit -u 2048" >> /etc/sysconfig/httpd
  3. Restart Apache web server.
