Website is not available: HTTP(S) ports are closed intermittently

Applicable to:

  • Plesk 12.5 for Linux

Symptoms

  • Check of a dedicated IP on the ports 80 and 443 with the nmap utility shows that they are in the closed state:

    # nmap -p 80 203.0.113.2
    PORT    STATE  SERVICE
    80/tcp  closed http
    # nmap -p 443 203.0.113.2
    PORT    STATE  SERVICE
    443/tcp closed https
  • Other IP addresses on a server are in the open state on these ports.
  • Check of a dedicated IP with the ping , traceroute or mtr finishes successfully.
  • netstat output shows that nginx or Apache listen on all IP addresses.
  • No errors could be found in the system logs at /var/log/... or in the domain logs at /var/www/vhosts/system/example.com/logs/ .
  • If check a website with curl from the server itself, the page are returned successfully:

        # curl 203.0.113.2:80
    <!DOCTYPE html>
    ..........
    # curl -k https://203.0.113.2:443
    <!DOCTYPE html>
    ..........
  • After some time, the ports 80 and 443 are switched into the open state and a website become available.

Cause

Intermittent network issue. No issues with a website on the Plesk side.

Resolution

Contact your system administartor in order to fix the network issue.
