Attempt to (de)activate module using plesk sbin php_modules_ctl
For example:

# plesk sbin php_modules_ctl -p /opt/plesk/php/7.1/bin/php -c /opt/plesk/php/7.1/etc/php.ini --enable=modulename -v

Provides additional unnecessary output

basename: missing operand
Try 'basename --help' for more information.

Answer

Directory for additional PHP config files have .ini file which does not contains extension=somemodule.so or zend_extension=somemodule.so

For example: # /opt/plesk/php/7.1/etc/php.d/custom.ini date.timezone=UTC
