Plesk upgrade fails: MSI: Error! Critical action 'Upgrade data of MySQL Server...' failed

Symptoms

Plesk upgrade fails with the error:

upgrading Plesk SQL server... 

MSI: Error! Critical action 'Upgrade data of MySQL Server...' failed: Command "C:\Program Files (x86)\Parallels\Plesk\admin\bin\mysqlmng_adm.exe" --upgrade-server-data "--initial-ver=4.1" "--target-ver=5.5.52" failed with code 1. Output: Stop service...
Removing InnoDB log files...
Start service...
Upgrade only the system tables...
Execute C:\Program Files (x86)\Parallels\Plesk\MySQL\bin\mysql_upgrade.exe --force --upgrade-system-tables -P8306 failed[1]: Looking for 'mysql.exe' as: C:\Program Files (x86)\Parallels\Plesk\MySQL\bin\mysql.exe The system cannot find the file specified.
FATAL ERROR: Can't execute 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Parallels\Plesk\MySQL\bin\mysql.exe'

The following command shows similar output:

C:\dir > NUL

The system cannot find the file specified.

Cause

Corrupted Windows installation, NUL device is corrupted.

Resolution

Perform OS restore or try to restore null device manually:

  1. Import the null.reg file to registry(attached)
  2. If it shows permission errors, change permissions for corresponding registry branch as follows:

    • open regestry snap-in Start->Run...->Enter "regedit"->OK
    • Rightclick to this key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_NULL and select Permissions. Give all permissions to 'Everyone' and try to import this file again.
  3. Start service:

    C:> sc start null
    
  4. Continue Plesk upgrade.
