Scheduled backups to FTP server fail periodically

Symptoms

  1. Scheduled backups to FTP server fail periodically with the following error:

    Error: 
    Unable to upload dump to FTP, it remains in server repository and you can manually download and upload it to FTP. Upload diagnostic message: Repository error: Unable to save data to an archive. Check whether the target directory is accessible for writing. For more information, see the log file (/opt/psa/PMM/sessions/2017-01-08-040102.472/migration.log)
  2. In /opt/psa/PMM/sessions/2017-01-08-040102.472/migration.log the following records can be found:

    INFO: Ftp init url ftps://ftp.example.com//backup_1701150401.tar
    INFO: Error 28 Timeout was reached
    INFO: Trying to resume upload...
    INFO: Error 28 Timeout was reached
    INFO: Trying to resume upload...
    ...
    INFO: The utility executed with the return code: -1
    INFO: RepositoryError[cb23f256-2a46-48b6-850a-1719186285be]: Repository error: Unable to save data to an archive. Check whether the target directory is accessible for writing. For more information, see the log file (/opt/psa/PMM/sessions/2017-01-08-040102.472/migration.log) [:1]

Cause

Issues on the FTP server's side:

  1. Not enough free disk space on the FTP server.

  2. No permissions for the FTP user to write to the target directory.

Resolution

Check the log files on the FTP server to find the root cause and fix the issue.
