Why the following message occurs when using wildcard for spamassassin: "Wrong syntax for command's '-update' parameter"?

Question

Why when using the following (or similar) command:

# plesk bin spamassassin --update *@example.com -status true -personal-conf true -hits 5 -action move

The following message occurs:

Wrong syntax for command's '-update' parameter. '*@example.com' does not match the pattern '/^[\w-\+'&]+((\.)[\w-\+'&]+)*@[a-z\d\x7f-\xff]([a-z\d\-\x7f-\xff]{0,61}[a-z\d\x7f-\xff])?(\.[a-z\d\x7f-\xff]([a-z\d\-\x7f-\xff]{0,61}[a-z\d\x7f-\xff])?)+$/i'

Answer

Wildcards "*" and "?" are applicable for adding addresses in blacklist/whitelist only and cannot be used in the mailbox name for which SpamAssassin options are applied.
