Cannot move folder via File Manager: Error occurred during /bin/mv command

Symptoms

  • File Manager shows the following error when trying to move a folder to the location where a non-empty folder with the same name exists.

    Unable to move /folder_1/folder: filemng failed: filemng: Error occurred during /bin/mv command.

  • The following error can be found in /var/log/plesk/panel.log:

    ERR [util_exec] proc_close() failed ['/usr/local/psa/admin/bin/filemng' 'user' 'mv' '/var/www/vhosts/folder_1/folder' '/var/www/vhosts/folder_2/folder'] with exit code [1]
    ERR [1] '/usr/local/psa/admin/bin/filemng' 'user' 'mv' '/var/www/vhosts/folder_1/folder' '/var/www/vhosts/folder_2/folder' failed with code 1.
    stdout:
    mv: cannot move ‘/var/www/vhosts/folder_1/folder’ to ‘/var/www/vhosts/folder_2/folder’:
    Directory not empty
    filemng: Error occurred during /bin/mv command.
    stderr:
    filemng: Error occurred during /bin/mv command.

Cause

Plesk uses the OS default utility mv to move folders.

This utility cannot move a folder to another location if there is a not-empty folder with the same name there.

Resolution

Make sure that there is no folder with the same name in the target location. Remove/rename the old folder before moving.
