MS SQL database migration error: can't decode bytes in position: illegal multibyte sequence

Applicable to:

  • Plesk Onyx 17.5 for Windows

Symptoms

MSSQL database of subscription can not be migrated with an error:

Failed to execute local command 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Plesk\admin\bin\dbbackup.exe --restore -server=localhost -server-type=mssql -server-login=sa -server-pwd=<PASSWORD> -database=test_db -backup-path= C:\Program Files (x86)\Plesk\var\modules\panel-migrator\sessions\20170703103426\target-server\mssql-dumps\db_backup_test2.com.tw_test_db.sql': 'cp950' codec can't decode bytes in position 39-40: illegal multibyte sequence

Cause

Plesk internal issue with id #PMT-3832, which is planned to be fixed in future Plesk updates.

Workaround

Replace the file %plesk_dir%\dbbackup.exe with an attached one and restart the migration.
