Large increase in log size for /var/log/php-fpm directory after CageFS extension is enabled

Applicable to:

  • Plesk for Linux
  • Plesk Onyx for Linux

Symptoms

  1. There is a huge php-fpm logs size. Listing of /var/log/php-fpm results in a large log files size:
    # ll /var/log/php-fpm
    total 110943352
    -rw------- 1 root root 59880963424 Jan 3 11:59 error.log
    -rw------- 1 root root 61650 Dec 10 09:40 error.log-20161212
    -rw------- 1 root root 3939 Dec 16 16:14 error.log-20161218
    -rw------- 1 root root 56 Dec 18 03:23 error.log-20161225
    -rw------- 1 root root 53724933864 Jan 1 03:43 error.log-20170101

  2. There are a lot of the following errors in /var/log/php-fpm/error.log:
WARNING: [pool example.com] child 73263 said into stderr: "ERROR: [pool example.com] CageFS jail error Skeleton directory is not mounted: /usr/share/cagefs-skeleton: No such file or directory (2)"
WARNING: [pool example.com] child 73263 said into stderr: "ERROR: [pool example.com] child failed to initialize", pipe is closed

  3. CageFS skeleton directory and all users are not mounted:
    # cat /proc/mounts |grep cage
  4. cagefs service is not running and is disabled for auto-start after the server reboot:
    # systemctl status cagefs
cagefs.service - CageFS service Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/cagefs.service; disabled; vendor preset: disabled)
    Active: inactive (dead)

Cause

The site is configured to work with cagefs but it was not started after the server reboot

Resolution

1. Execute the command:

# cagefsctl --remount-all

This command restarts cagefs service and remounts CageFS skeleton directory and all users.

2. Configure cagefs to start after the system boot. For more information refer to the official CloudLinux documentation .
