Apache hangs and crashes on Debian 8.6/Ubuntu 16.04: mod_fcgid: too much processes please increase FCGID_MAX_APPLICATION

Symptoms

  • Apache hangs and crashes on Debian 8.6/Ubuntu 16.04

  • The following errors appear in /var/log/apache2/error.log :

    [timestamp] [fcgid:warn] [pid 1111] mod_fcgid: too much processes, please increase FCGID_MAX_APPLICATION

Cause

mod_fcgid processes got the maximum value.

Resolution

  1. Download and install patched mod_fcgid package from attachment:

    # dpkg -i libapache2-mod-fcgid-psa
  2. Restart Apache

    systemctl restart apache2
