Apache restart fails: (98)Address already in use: AH00072: make_sock: could not bind to address

Applicable to:

  • Plesk Onyx for Linux

Symptoms

The apache2 service is properly configured, but an error occurs during the restart on Ubuntu 14.04:

# service apache2 restart
* Restarting web server apache2 (98)Address already in use: AH00072: make_sock: could not bind to address [::]:80
(98)Address already in use: AH00072: make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:80
no listening sockets available, shutting down
AH00015: Unable to open logs
Action 'start' failed.
The Apache error log may have more information.
[fail]
* The apache2 instance did not start within 20 seconds. Please read the log files to discover problems

Cause

Bug in Apache start script. Startup script is trying to start apache service faster than it can be stopped.

Resolution

Install updated libapache2-mod-fcgid package manually.

Solution #2

  • Create a backup of /etc/init.d/apache2 file:
    # cp /etc/init.d/apache2 apache2.bak
  • Replace /etc/init.d/apache2 with attached file .
  • Restart apche2 service:
    # service apache2 restart

NOTE : The upgrade of the apache2 package can rollback this fixes and the apache service can get the same issue with restart.
