Question
Does Plesk install updates for system packages automatically?
Answer
By default, Plesk automatically updates itself and supported third-party components, but does not install all available system package updates.
In order to alter this behavior, do the following:
-
Go to Tools & Settings > System Updates > Settings;
-
Enable the Automatically install system package updates option:
Note: kernel updates are excluded from Plesk Update Manager and should be checked for manually (see the article for details).
To keep kernel updated, KernelCare Extension can also be used

Article lacks info of the update itself:
To install system package updates please use the
apt-get
utility. Run the command below to start the update of system packages:After the installation is completed, please reboot the server via the following command at a suitable time:
In addition, you can also try using KernelCare extension to be sure that a server's kernel is up-to-date. The extension allows installing kernel updates on the fly without rebooting the server.
It is safe to update Plesk server's system packages using an operating system package manager and moreover, we recommend to keep the system up-to-date and update system packages from official repositories in case such updates are available. It allows keeping your Plesk server secured. Please refer to the following article for details: Is it safe to update Plesk server's system packages using an operating system package manager?

Articles in our KB (including this one) refer to Plesk functionality, whereas updating system packages is a system administrative task that should be performed independently. As for the kernel updates, there is also a link in the article explaining the process and suggesting KernelCare as an automatic alternative.
@Leonid Gukhman,
True, however it's extremly important to point out this fact, that the article recommended actions do NOT fully cover full server update, and what are the additional stesp required to achieve such full server update. Clients do NOT care what portion of the server update is taken care on Plesk, but that they get a fully updated server.
