Symptoms

Unable to log in to webmail:

500 Internal Server Error

The following error in Apache web server error.log:

# tail -fn0 /var/log/apache2/error.log
[fcgid:warn] [pid 24273:tid 140607112550144] (104)Connection reset by peer: [client 203.0.113.2:44326] mod_fcgid: error reading data from FastCGI server
[core:error] [pid 24273:tid 140607112550144] [client 203.0.113.2:44326] End of script output before headers: index.php

There is missing fastcgi handler while list available PHP handlers:

# /usr/local/psa/admin/bin/php_handlers_control --list

Attempt to re-read fails

# /usr/local/psa/admin/bin/php_handlers_control --reread
Error adding handler from /etc/psa/php_versions.d/php-module.conf: Handler with id = `module' already exists
Error adding handler from /etc/psa/php_versions.d/php-fastcgi.conf: Handler with id = `fastcgi' already exists
Error adding handler from /etc/psa/php_versions.d/php-cgi.conf: Handler with id = `cgi' already exists
Error adding handler from /etc/psa/php_versions.d/php5-fpm.conf: Handler with id = `fpm' already exists
[Warning] removing handler `' (fastcgi) as corresponding /usr/bin/php5-cgi doesn't exist
[Warning] removing handler `' (module) as corresponding /usr/bin/php5-cgi doesn't exist
[Warning] removing handler `' (cgi) as corresponding /usr/bin/php5-cgi doesn't exist

Cause

System PHP handler fastcgi is not registered in Plesk.

Resolution

Move configuration files mentioned in error produced by reread command to another location:

# mkdir /root/backup/
# cd /etc/psa/php_versions.d/
# mv php5-cgi.conf /root/backup/
# mv php5-fastcgi.conf /root/backup/
# mv php5-fpm.conf /root/backup/
# mv php5-module.conf /root/backup/

Reread handlers once again:

# /usr/local/psa/admin/bin/php_handlers_control --reread
