Ubuntu 16.06 writes system log to /var/log/syslog.1 file after logrotation

Symptoms

On Ubuntu 16.06, after log rotation, syslog keeps logging into /var/log/syslog.1 file.

Cause

Misconfiguration in /etc/logrotate.d/rsyslog file. rsyslog has not been properly forced to reopen the files that it is using.

Resolution

Make sure that the following line is added to "postrotate" section of /etc/logrotate.d/rsyslog file:

invoke-rc.d rsyslog rotate > /dev/null
