Wildcard SSL on a subdomain is not working with www prefix

Applicable to:

  • Plesk 12.5 for Windows

Symptoms

Wildcard SSL certificate on a subdomain is not working with www prefix.

Certificate is issued for * .example.com and it is working when accessing https://sub.example.com , however, it shows warning message when trying to access https://www.sub.example.com .

Cause

Certificate is issued only for third level domain.

Resolution

According to this certificate, protection will work only for * .example.com (as https://sub.example.com ) and not for * . * .example.com (as https://www.sub.example.com ).

There are no multi-level wildcard certificates, with two wildcard levels (like * . * .example.com ) since no browsers recognize this configuration.

To protect the new wildcard certificate is needed, e.g. * .sub.example.com would protect https://www.sub.example.com .

Please contact your centificate issuer for further assistance,.
