Message with big attachment is not checked with SpamAssassin: skipped message, greater than max message size (256000 bytes)

Applicable to:

  • Plesk 12.5 for Linux
  • Plesk Onyx for Linux
  • Plesk 11.5 for Linux
  • Plesk 12.0 for Linux

Symptoms

The following error appears in the /var/log/maillog, when a message with a big attachment is received:

plesk spamc[28423]: skipped message, greater than max message size (256000 bytes)

Mailbox-level blacklist is ignored: messages from blacklisted domains are delivered.

Cause

Default SpamAssassin configuration.

Resolution

SpamAssassin does not check messages with attachments larger than 256KB. This value provides normal server loading. A larger value may cause heavy load on the server while processing big messages.

The mailbox-level blacklist is SpamAssassin's blacklist. When SpamAssassin ignores too large messages and does not scan them, it does not check the domain name against its blacklist. Therefore, such message is delivered.

Starting from Plesk 11.5.30, there is an option to configure max mail size for SpamAssassin. Parameter SA_MAX_MAIL_SIZE in /etc/psa/psa.conf can be modified as follows:

#grep "SA_MAX" /etc/psa/psa.conf
SA_MAX_MAIL_SIZE 768000

Please keep in mind that SA_MAX_MAIL_SIZE value is in bytes. In the example above, SpamAssasin will check all messages with the size up to 768KB.
