Unable to send email. SMTP authorization does not work.

Applicable to:

  • Plesk 12.5 for Linux

Symptoms

Unable to send email. SMTP authorization does not work, even though valid login credentials are used

/var/log/messages contains the following error:

www postfix/smtpd[7119]: Unable to open database(readonly) /var/spool/postfix/plesk/passwd.db: unable to open database file

But the file /var/spool/postfix/plesk/passwd.db is actually present and has all proper permissions set.

/etc/postfix/master.cf contains the following:

# ==========================================================================
# service type private unpriv chroot wakeup maxproc command + args
# (yes) (yes) (yes) (never) (100)
# ==========================================================================
smtp inet n - - - - smtpd

Cause

Chroot flag was enabled.

Resolution

  1. Edit /etc/postfix/master.cf and replace - (minus) to n in column #5, so the resulting file string should looks as follows:

    # ==========================================================================
    # service type private unpriv chroot wakeup maxproc command + args
    # (yes) (yes) (yes) (never) (100)
    # ==========================================================================
    smtp inet n - n - - smtpd
  2. Restart postfix

    service postfix restart
