Unable to encrypt or restore backup: Backup format conversion failed. Unable to load the XML file Error at line 111

Symptoms

The following error appears when trying to backup domain:

Error: server "server"
Cannot encrypt dump file (this is not fatal error!): Backup format
conversion failed. Unable to load the XML file
/mnt/backup/example/clients/example.example/domains/example.com/backup_info_1612100302_1612120302.xml.
Error at line 111.

The following error appears when trying to restore a domain from dump:

/usr/local/psa/PMM/rsessions/20161212155810477/dump/info.xml:2024:49: not well-formed (invalid token)

There is a non-unicode character in the mentioned .xml file on the mentioned line.

Cause

This is Plesk internal issue with id PPPM-5393 , the fix will be provided in the nearest Plesk updates.

Workaround

Restore corrupted backups:

  1. Remove all the non-unicode characters from affected .xml files:

    # grep -l -r -P "\\x{fffe}" --include=*.xml /<backup_directory>/ | xargs sed -i.bak "s/\\xef\\xbf\\xbe.\\{4\\}//g" $@
  2. Reset status cache, so the corrections in the .xml files were applied:

    # find /<backup_directory>/ -type f -name status_* | xargs rm -f
